This past Wednesday members of the SREL DNA lab, including myself, collected four Green Anoles (Anolis carolinensis). These anoles will be used to make BAC libraries as part of the Anolis genome project (PDF). We were lucky to enjoy some sunny 60 degree weather as a cold snap lifted. Additionally, we needed male anoles. Males have both sex chomosomes and will provide a more complete genetic map than female anoles. Again luck was on our side - all the anoles we caught were male. A truely fortuitous day.

This is pretty funny. Well, if you surf the net as much as I do that is!

This is my pal Bill’s awesome bean dip recipe. I made this for the SuperBowl. It’s addictive and very fattening. Not a good combination if you’re trying to lose weight. But, it’s so worth it. Mmm…

• 1/2 block of Velveta (looks like ~2 sticks of butter)
• 1 jar of salsa. Bill recommends the “Pace Medium Salsa.”
• 1 can of Black Beans (aka. Frijoles Negros). Don’t forget to drain them!
• 1 can of chili. Vegetarian works great.

Combine all the ingredients in a sauce pan and simmer until the cheese melts. For the best flavor this should take ~ 15 mins.
Serve with lots of Tortilla chips. Try not to gorge yourself.
